The Book

Dear Reader,

Greetings! Matt Rouge here, coauthor of the book. Thank you for visiting our site and showing interest in our book. First I’d like to present our official marketing blurb; then I’d like to let you in on a few secrets about Getting to Why.

First, the blurb:

Getting to Why is a practical guide to finding your highest purpose, fulfilling that purpose in every area of life, and sharing that purpose with others. An expert in personal and organizational effectiveness, author JB Symons leads the way with an easy-to-understand, step-by-step process. Each chapter of the book includes a true story from JB’s decades of experience, a humorous illustration by popular artist Alexandra Douglass, and workbook exercises for deepening your understanding of yourself. Ideal for transforming both personal life and career, Getting to Why is your guide to life’s most important question.

Getting to Why is an amazing book for figuring out your path in life and living it in a new way. A lot of books promise you transformation, however. What makes our book different? Here are the secrets:

Practical ideas you can use immediately. I met JB in 2006 through a series of breakfast networking meetings. Over several weeks, we members of the group each presented what we did professionally. When he gave his presentation, JB made an immediate and big impression on me. Here was someone who really understood business. And people. One thing that struck me was that JB had very specific, easy-to-understand and -implement ideas and methods about a wide range of topics. A few that have made a big impact on my own life are the Cycle of Wellness, the DAO Method, the Goal Planning Worksheet, and the Delegation Planning Worksheet. They’re all in the book, and that’s just a small sample.

Workbook. As you know, the workbook is free to download right here on this site. Although it is included in the print book and ebook, we wanted to offer it in PDF format so that people could conveniently print it out and use it. We didn’t want you merely to read about the new ideas and methods that Getting to Why has to offer; we wanted you to absorb them and then apply them so that you get genuine results. Yes, answering the questions and performing the exercises requires a significant effort on your part, but if you get the answers down on paper, you will see some amazing results.

Compact structure. My main contributions to the book are of a secretarial and editorial nature. I interviewed JB and put all the materials together. I make no claim to originality, however, as I learned how to structure a book like this through the works of authors I admire: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker, Secrets of Closing the Sale by Zig Ziglar, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven R. Covey, and Soul Prints by Marc Gafni. My hope is that Getting to Why is as easy to follow and digest as these. Many people finish it in two to three days.

No-nonsense writing. The voice you hear in Getting to Why is JB’s voice. This is really how he thinks and talks. I hope you get to hear JB speak or meet him someday in real life, but this book is a pretty good substitute! JB is an extremely no-nonsense kind of guy, and Getting to Why reflects this personality. There’s no psychobabble, no difficult concepts thrown in just to impress you. Rather, you get 100% proven, easy-to-understand ideas and methods that will make a real difference in your life.

As Zig Ziglar would say, Why not give it a try?

My best,

Matt Rouge
